Rochester Belly Dance
Bringing Out Real Beauty in Women

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Middle Eastern Dance?  It is just another name for Belly Dance.  Other names are Raks Sharqi or Oriental Danse.  Dancers themselves use a variety of terms to describe each dancer's style of dance.

Are your sessions open to all ages?  Anyone who has a spine and can follow directions can dance!  My own young daughters loved to help me practice veil in the living room. Belly Dancing is open to girls and women of all ages.

Do you teach private lessons?  I teach  private lessons at Rochester International Dance Studio.

I have to lose weight before I can dance like that!  No you don't!  Dancing is exercise and if you really want to lose weight then you need to exercise first!  Not the other way around.
Plus Belly Dance is all about celebrating the body:  all its jiggles and wiggles, flesh and fold.  This is a dance made for all women, not just skinny women.

Is Middle Eastern Dance appropriate for children's parties?
Absolutely!  Girls LOVE to dance with scarves and veils.  I am the mother of three daughters, current Girl Scout leader and former school teacher.  I would never teach girls anything which I think is inappropriate for my own children.

What do I wear?  Yoga wear or whatever is comfortable.  I wear workout pants and a tank top or t-shirt.  Bare feet or socks are best.

What about guys? Just  like most forms of dance (think Riverdance), men do Middle Eastern dancing.  I am comfortable with having men in the class if you are.  Men just do the moves more masculine.  If men are involved in the party, they are required to try, not just observe.
